Administration Structure


 


Leadership Titles in Kentokukan

 

SHINAN   Founder of the School of Kentokukan.  Establishes the foundation, philosophy and mission of the school.  Conducts research, advises and consults aids in administration.  Chairs the High Council.
 SO SHIHAN                         (7th Dan and above) Director General of the School of Kentokukan. Chief Executive officer. Member of the High Council and acts as Chair on behalf of Shinan.  The position is one of appointment by the Shinan and/or elected by members of the High Council from the Council of Young Elders.
SHIHAN (6th Dan and above) Master of Kentokukan.He/She is the embodiment of the Kentokukan philosophy values and teachings dedicated to the advancement of Kentokukan and its members. May serve on the High Council.
 KODANSHA (5th Dan and above) Black Belt holder.
YUDANSHA (below 5th Dan)  Black Belt holder.
DESHI (4th Dan and above)  Disciple of Kentokukan. A student who accepts to follow the philosophy and values as a lifetime commitment after at least 10 years of continuous study.
 O SENSEI  Full time teacher of at least 30 years. A teacher of renown, a person who has dedicated a major portion of his/her life to the profession of teaching and mentoring students in Kentokukan.
SENSEI (2nd Dan and above)  Teacher/Instructor - A student who fulfills the requirements and regulations earning a license to instruct. Teaches or operated a Kentokukan dojo.
BUDOKA (4th Dan and up)  A Kentokukan student who has expanded his/her studies to include a variety of other disciplines and Martial Arts.
DAI-SEMPAI (1st Kyu) The most senior Yukyusha (non Black Belt) in a Kentokukan dojo.He/She is responsible for the day to day operations of the dojo.  Assists the Sensei and represents the Yukyusha of the dojo.
SEMPAI (Most senior Yukyusha in the dojo)                              
 A Yukyusha member of senior rank Assists Dai-Sempai in management of the dojo.  Assists fellow Yukyusha.
KOHAI  Yukyusha member of junior rank. Accepts responsibilities, follows direction and studies to be the best student in and out of class.
KARATEDOKA  A Kentokukan student who studies Karatedo

Admission Policies


Students from Outside Shorinjiryu Kentokukan

Applicant must submit a formal request to join Shorinjiryu Kentokukan Karatedo.

  • The applicant must send a letter to their present Karate organization informing them of their intent to leave their current organization and why. We need a registered copy of this letter.
  • The applicant must submit to our organization a curriculum vitae of their Karate career.
  • The applicant must enclose copies of all dan ranks.
  • The applicant must submit two professional references supporting your character and credibility.
  • The applicant must commit to "emptying the cup". This means the applicant must join the organization as a 10th kyu white belt and agrees to study and advance through the Yukyusha ranks before taking a Shodan (1st degree/dan black belt) exam.
  • The applicant completes an interview with Shinan Donivan at his convenience.

Reactivation and Inactive Status

GENERAL:

  • Members failing to participate in two consecutive training camps are classified as inactive.
  • Inactive members are not permitted to participate in any formal functions. (Black Belt exams, presentations, demonstrations, or tournaments)

PROCESS:

To be re-activated the following is required:

  • Send a written request to Shinan Donivan of you intent to become re-activated.
  • A re-activation fee of $50.00 to be sent with the written request.
  • Register at a sanctioned Kentokukan Dojo.
    • Hombu (Montreal, Quebec.)
    • Hachidoken (Calgary, Alberta.)
    • Bushidokan (St Albert, Alberta.)
    • Wa No Kaze Kai (Athabasca, Alberta)


Participate in an annual training camp. (Prerequisite is six weeks of training before camp participation).

Note: Those members living outside a sanctioned Dojo area are entitled to arrange a home training and study program. This program should be administered and monitored by the chief instructor or by a senior ranked instructor selected by the chief instructor. As mentioned above, six weeks of training is required prior to attending a national or provincial training camp. (Revised 4 July 2001)
