Ranking System and Curriculum The ranking system used in Shorinjiryu Kentokukan is called the Kyu/Dan system. It recognizes a student’s proficiency and development by awarding ranks from 10th Kyu (white belt) to 1st Kyu (brown belt). Just like grades in school to rate ability, as students gain skill, the award of colored belts marks their advancement as they progress though these grades to black belt level. It generally takes several years of study and practice to reach black belt level. Each grade of promotion is a symbol of honest accomplishment, but remains only a symbol. The truly successful student is one who has learned to enjoy walking the path, rather than worrying too much about the destination. The higher Dan or black belt ranks are 1st Dan through 10th Dan. This learning journey is represented in the following illustration. Kentokukan Learning Structure
